What’s the point? Reflections on camping, eco life and why we do what we do.

After a few weeks off the blog, we’ve had sometime to really reflect about everything Gymea Homestead and what it means to us so it got us thinking what’s the point?

We started this blog to share our love of camping, animals and trying to live a little bit more eco friendly. You can read our about page to learn that we started this page to brighten up our friends’ pandemic struggles. We expected people to laugh, like and comment. What we didn’t expect was the questions flooding in. So we decided to dive back into the blog with a more personal post about the heart felt answers to the top three frequently asked questions about why we do what we do!

Why so many animals?

Why not? Seriously you think it’s crazy but then you start scrolling through #adoptdontshop on Instagram and you just think I’ll fill out this form and see where it goes. Or you go to pick up supplies for your other pets at the local shelter (to support them you know?) and see another baby that you didn’t even know you were missing. Your measure out a space on the floor, 50x50cm, I could spare that for a bunny or two and then it’s all over. In seriousness though we just love it. They make us cry, just make us laugh and we are so proud to be blessed with such beautiful little fur children.

All our animals are rescues from either the RSPCA or Sydney Dogs and Cats Home. Will knew that Cody would just foster fail every creature she bought home so now we’ve just been working really hard to max out our adoption quota.

Also you know they are your favourite part of this whole damn get up!

What inspired you to focus on living more environmentally friendly?

We are always have been big believers of the idea that “you can only do what I can do”. Cody has always been passionate about the environment. She has always felt at home with sand between her toes or walking through bush on country and listening to the birds sing.

So before climate activism was trending on Tik Tok Cody was really keen to reduce her impact. However, after watching zero waste YouTubers, making her own almond milk and mouldy toothbrushes she thought “this is really F!&King hard”. So she adjusted, worked out what was realistic for her (and later Will) and did what she could do slowly adopting small changes.

Now listen we drive a diesel car for Christ’s sake so we are definitely not judging but if you are keen on making your footprint a little lighter then you’ll be really keen to read our upcoming blogs.

Why on earth would you go camping?

Save your gritty hotel bedsheets and crazy Airbnb hosts because there is Splendour in the Grass 2022 style camping and then there is bloody CAMPING! We prefer the latter. Our favourite part is sitting by a fire late at night with no phone reception staring up at the stars you’ll never see in the city and just realising that all your big city problems don’t mean anything. Your work stresses, feeling like you have no time or waiting an eternity for them to release the new season of Stranger Things doesn’t matter. But those conversations your have with friends and family (fur family included) around a camp fire you’ll remember forever.

Then you’ll go to a nice, warm, dry bed because this isn’t Splendour in the Grass and wake up in the morning to a fresh cup of coffee your wonderful life partner has made you (cause this isn’t Splendour in the Grass) and realise that not only your coffee cup is full but also your mother f!@king soul.

And folks that is why we camp.
